Universal Design Bathroom, Eastham

During the planning stages of a standard bathroom remodel, one of the homeowners had to have surgery that resulted in the permanent use of a wheelchair. The design had to be reconfigured to accommodate the changes in their lifestyle.  Designing this style of bathroom for our clients is not unusual.  We have many clients that want universal design for aging in place, or have first floor living later in life and plan accordingly during a renovation.  This bathroom needed to function well for both clients – a six-foot tall man and a woman in a wheelchair. The bathroom needed to have two vanities – one for him, and one for her.  The shower needed to be wheelchair accessible and finally, safety bars needed to be installed throughout the room.

In 2023, this bathroom won a Silver BRICC award for Universal Design from the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod.
